Given that There have been a lot of debate with regards to “WP” and “Oval P” markings and it’s a little baffling, no less than to me. I made an effort to checklist the different situations for its prevalence or what may very well be encountered (Im sure I skipped a handful of), to which I greatly welcome comment.

Ned Schwing said in his reference reserve about the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began proof marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that is precise, but will suppose that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was applied following the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and completed. This is highly apparent around the firearms produced in the late teens by way of early 30s in the event the blue flaked (popped) off when the proof was struck within the receiver body.
